Creating a Wonderful Beginning for Both Mother and Baby

The Family Birthplace at Riverside Community Hospital offers the Riverside Community Hospital Breastfeeding Center as part of our commitment to help create a wonderful beginning for both mother and baby.

In 2012, Riverside Community Hospital received the prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly® birth facility by Baby-Friendly USA. By receiving this recognition, it means that Riverside Community Hospital supports breast-feeding through The Ten Steps to Successful Breast-feeding for Hospitals, as outlined by UNICEF and WHO. The steps include following a policy that is routinely communicated, educating expectant mothers about breast-feeding, helping initiate breast-feeding within one hour of birth and teaching women how to maintain lactation. The Ten Steps encourage breastfeeding on demand and "rooming in" – to allow mothers and babies to remain together, as well as referring mothers to breast-feeding support upon discharge.

As a Baby Friendly Hospital, we understand the importance and benefits of breastfeeding and strongly encourage all of our mothers to do so. Mothers sometimes experience challenges in the beginning while trying to breastfeed, which is why we offer free breastfeeding classes and support to the mothers in our community.

Our classes are led by our Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and certified lactation educators who are there to provide support and encouragement, while helping mothers achieve the best breastfeeding experience. Studies show that breastfeeding can have significant health benefits for both the newborn and the mother.

Our free Breastfeeding Center is open to the mommies in the community, regardless where you deliver, offering support to any mother and baby having challenges (e.g. low milk, sore nipples). We see self-referrals, as well as referrals from community physicians, birth centers and other lactation programs by appointment.
