Riverside Community Hospital (RCH) is a 517 bed teaching institution serving the Southern California community for over 110 years. Riverside Community Hospital houses one of the largest emergency departments and has recently been designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center. Additionally, RCH serves as a Comprehensive and Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center and is one of the largest STEMI receiving centers. Specialty services include invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures, the accredited Chest Pain Center, the Center of Excellence for Surgical Weight Loss, the Transplant Program, the Cancer Center, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Joint Commission has recognized RCH as a top performing hospital on key quality measures for three consecutive years in a row. Additionally, RCH has received national recognition for patient safety and a five-star orthopedic rating by Healthgrades. Moreover, the Leapfrog Group has recently given RCH a Grade A rating for patient safety!

Riverside Community Hospital is a regional medical affiliate with the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine and a referral center for higher levels of care for many different service lines. In addition to being mentored by highly trained pharmacy preceptors in a variety of specialized practice areas, residents will train alongside more than 200 resident physicians in 11 specialties from RCH’s Graduate Medical Education Program.

General information

The residency program is designed and conducted in a manner that supports residents in achieving the required educational competency areas, goals, and objectives, as described by the ASHP PGY1 accreditation standards. Pharmacists completing the PGY1 Residency program will be competent, confident, and compassionate pharmacy practitioners serving patients, healthcare professionals, and the community. The resident is encouraged to be a self-directed learner and exhibit a strong commitment to the advancement of the pharmacy profession. The training will equip residents with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of current and future pharmacy practice. The program will also provide experience in learning how to coordinate the provision of pharmaceutical care with the needs of the institution and foster the ability to conceptualize and implement new pharmacy services. This program is designed to provide training within a broad range of pharmacy practice settings, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the needs and goals of the individual resident.

The PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
