Genetic counseling & cancer risk assessment

Hereditary cancer risk assessment and counseling is available to individuals who have concerns about their personal and/or family history of cancer. Patients are provided with personalized information regarding genetic predisposition to cancer, cancer risk and options for cancer screening and prevention. These services are provided by an experienced, board-certified genetic counselor. Genetic counseling appointments are one hour and are conducted by telephone. Genetic testing is coordinated through the Cancer Center at Riverside Community Hospital.

Risk factors for possible hereditary cancer can include:

  • Family member with a known genetic variant
  • Multiple family members with the same type of cancer
  • An unusual clustering of cancers in a family
  • Cancer at a younger age than typical (diagnosed before age 50)
  • Triple negative breast cancer (ER-, PR-, HER2- pathology) before age 60
  • Invasive ovarian* cancer diagnosed at any age
  • Pancreatic cancer at any age
  • Breast and/or ovarian cancer in a family (especially those with Jewish ancestry)
  • Male breast cancer at any age
  • 10 or more cumulative (lifetime) colon polyps in the same person
  • Colorectal cancer at any age with high microsatellite instability (MSI) or IHC abnormal
  • An individual with more than one primary cancer
  • Rare or unusual tumors and/or physical findings, especially diagnosed at a young age
  • Early-onset pancreatic, diffuse gastric, or renal cancer (diagnosed before 50)
  • Melanoma diagnosed before age 40 or in multiple members on the same side of the family
  • Medullary thyroid or adrenocortical cancer diagnosed at any age
