Riverside Community Hospital's Graduate Medical Education Department Welcomes 2017 Class of Medical Residents at White Coat Ceremony
Last Monday, Riverside Community Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education program hosted their second White Coat Ceremony as they welcomed the residency class of 2017.
Family, friends, faculty, administration from Riverside Community Hospital (RCH) and University of California-Riverside School of Medicine (UCR-SOM), along with dignitaries from the Riverside community were present to witness this special occasion as 61 new residents joined the 2016 inaugural class of Internal Medicine, along with five new programs including Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, OB/GYN, Transitional Year and Neurology.
The White Coat Ceremony is a memorable event and experience for new residents as they transition from medical school to the next part of their journey to become practicing physicians. Next to a stethoscope, the physician’s white coat is seen as the most recognizable symbol of the medical profession.
Earlier this year, the hospital announced the successful match of 41 residents as part of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), which took place March 17.
Each year, new medical school graduates, both national and international, and GME programs have an opportunity to review and interview each other through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for further education.
On National Match Day, RCH’s GME residency program fully matched newly graduated physicians in Family Medicine (8), Emergency Medicine (8) and Internal Medicine (25) as Resident physicians. The University of California-Riverside School of Medicine (UCR-SOM), the hospital’s academic partner, also matched four Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology. According to Medscape News, the NRMP program celebrated its largest match day this year with a record-high of 35,969 U.S. and international medical school students and graduates competing for 31,757 positions, the most ever offered on Match Day. By July 2018, Riverside Community Hospital Graduate Medical Education program will house a total of 132 new residents as part of their continually growing program.
“The explosive growth of our graduate medical education platform from 25 to 76 resident physicians has brought the excitement of an academic medical center to the campus,” said Kenneth E. Dozier M.D. and Designated Institutional Official of the GME Program at Riverside Community Hospital. “With the addition of the Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Neurology, Transitional Year and Ob/Gyn programs to our campus, we will be able to better provide compassionate care and improve the overall health of our community.”
Riverside Community Hospital welcomed their first class of 25 Internal Medicine residents with their academic affiliate, University of California-Riverside School of Medicine (UCR-SOM) in July of 2016 as part of the nationally accredited Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program. RCH now has accreditation for an Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Family Medicine Residency Program, Neurology, Transitional Year residencies along with an Ob/Gyn program which was added to our campus by our academic affiliate UCR School of Medicine. The new residents officially began the academic year July 1st.
