Do You Know Your BMI?

BMI is a dependable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death. The score is legitimate for men and women but it does have some limits. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build and it may underestimate body fat in older persons who have lost muscle mass.

Are you a candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Has managing your weight felt like a losing battle? If so, The Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Riverside Community Hospital has options that can help you live a healthier life.

Women with ScaleBeing overweight can have serious health consequences: decreased life expectancy, increased risk of heart disease and stroke, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and more.

Bariatric surgery is intended for individuals who are diagnosed with severe or"morbid" obesity. These patients have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (or approximately 100 lbs or more of excess weight), or who have a BMI between 30 and 39.9 (or approximately 75 lbs or more of excess weight) and who have obesity-related conditions listed above.

Surgical Procedures:

The Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Riverside Community Hospital, in the Inland Empire, offers three procedures for surgical weight loss: Adjustable Gastric Banding, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy. All procedures are performed laparoscopically through button-hole incisions on your abdomen which results in less pain, decreased scarring, decreased chances of infection and an accelerated return to normal activity.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
The band procedure is adjustable and removable. The stomach’s capacity is limited by an inflatable band placed around the upper portion of the stomach which decreases the capacity and the feeling of fullness. The stomach is not stapled or cut and the intestines are not re-routed. The band is adjusted, in the clinic, as needed for optimal weight loss. The procedure takes about 45 minutes to an hour and is done on an out-patient basis (you will go home the same evening of the surgery).

Laparoscopic Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass
This procedure effectively reduces the stomach size by stapling and separating the upper portion of the stomach. Further, part of the intestine is bypassed causing some calories to be malabsorbed. Rapid weight loss is the result of the restricted food intake and the malabsorption. The procedures take about 90 minutes to complete and you will typically be in the hospital for one to two nights.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
This is a restrictive procedure. A "banana" or "sleeve-shaped" stomach is created by stapling and removing the remnant of stomach. Remaining is a narrow tube or sleeve with a 1-4 ounce capacity. This procedure may be modified to a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass for additional weight loss. The procedure takes about an hour and a quarter and you will be hospitalized for one to two nights.
